This whole root has not been processed to remove glycyrrhizic acid. When glycyrrhizin is removed from Licorice, the product is called deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL.

Licorice root has been used since ancient times, across many cultures as food and as medicine. In Chinese medicine, Licorice is an ingredient in nearly all herbal formulas for the traditional purpose of "harmonizing" the separate herbs involved. This important tonic herb is often called 'the grandfather of herbs'.

Chinese Medical practitioners believe that Licorice is such a good harmonizing herb because it protects the body from the effect of some of the stronger herbs that may be added in some Chinese herbal formulas. It does this by protecting the liver cells from free-radical damage. By doing so it also augments the liver's ability to process toxins.

Premium organic Eleuthero is used in this product.
Eleuthero is recognized as being a gentle alternative to Panax Ginseng. Eleuthero is used during times of stress and is especially notable as an immune tonic in the middle aged and elderly.

Eleuthero was the first herb to be classified as an adaptogen by Russian scientists and was therefore, the model for all future research on this group of herbs. An adaptogen is a substance that helps the body adapt to various types of stress. In order to achieve this status a plant must meet the following criteria:
It must be safe.
It must also have a broad-spectrum, normalizing action that brings an organism back to homeostasis.
It must produce a nonspecific response in the body.

In the late 60's and 70's multiple studies of this herb were conducted in healthy people and Eleuthero was found to increase the ability of subjects to withstand stress (from heat, noise, exercise and increase in workload). Subjects also experienced increases in mental alertness and work output. As a result of this research, Eleuthero was being used by Russian athletes and astronauts to prepare them for their events.

Eleuthero contains a group of constituents known as eleutherosides it also contains triterpenoid sapponins, and glycans, and many others. Modern science has not proven either exactly how eleuthero works or the relevance of each of its various constituents. Most likely it is a combination of many of the constituents, and is therefore best to take the whole herb.

The extract is normally standardized to 0.8% eleutherosides B and E, and is normally taken at doses between 100-200 mg per day.  The standardized extract is a ten-fold concentrate of the whole herb that we sell.  The dose for the organic whole herb is 1000-2000 mg per day (or 1-2 grams).  The German Commission E and the British Herbal Pharmocopeia both recommend 2-3 grams per day for a variety of uses.

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid synthesized in the body from the essential amino acid phenylalanine. L-Tyrosine is the direct precursor to several important neurotransmitters, which affect many functions in the brain, including mood, stress response, mental function, satiety and sex drive. L-Tyrosine is also an important component of hormones that are produced in the thyroid. These hormones are in turn key for managing metabolism. L-Tyrosine is required to form melanin, the dark pigment present in the skin to shield the body from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.*

A conditionally essential amino acid, L-Tyrosine is one of the most important elements in maintaining neurotransmitter balance in the brain. Though the body has the ability to synthesize enough L-Tyrosine from phenylalanine to meet its daily physiological demands, in some instances supplementation with L-Tyrosine may be necessary. Since L-Tyrosine is an important cofactor in the production of the neurotransmitters associated with proper mood, norepinephrine and dopamine, L-tyrosine may be beneficial to those seeking to stabilize their frame of mind. Similarly, those with phenylketonuria, who cannot consume phenylalanine, may benefit from L-Tyrosine supplementation. L-Tyrosine can also be useful in promoting nerve and thyroid health.*

Milky Oat (Avena sativa):
One of the great nerve trophorestoratives. It gently and gradually helps to restore emotional balance and a calm demeanor. It is useful for anxiety, depression or irritability. Animal studies show that milky oat can enhance stress response, improve learning and decrease social avoidance.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera):
One of the most esteemed Rasayana or rejuvenative herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It is a calming adaptogen that also enhances testosterone levels and libido. In a human clinical trial, it enhanced libido and sexual performance as well as improving many parameters associated with aging. Withania has also shown the ability to reduce the effects of chronic stress and alleviate depression and anxiety.

Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa):
Black Cohosh is often referred to as the menopause herb, but this is not really accurate. While it has some benefit for relieving menopausal symptoms in women, one of its most effective uses is for hormonal depression, which includes andropausal depression in men.

Mimosa bark (Albizia julibrissin):
Known in Chinese medicine as He Huan Pi or Collective Happiness Herb, the name is fitting as it is one of the most effective mood elevators known. It can be used for depression, chronic grief and "broken hearts". Animal studies show that it has antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens):
Saw Palmetto is mostly known for its beneficial effects on the prostate gland. It not only reduces symptoms of BPH, it also helps relieve 'Grumpy Old Man Syndrome', which is exacerbated by increasing levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Saw Palmetto can inhibit conversion of testosterone to DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase.

Pulsatilla (Pulsatilla vulgaris):
was a popular remedy of the Eclectic physicians. It is used in very small amounts for hormonal depression, anxiety, irritability, moodiness and 'fly off the handle' anger. A closely related Korean species of Pulsatilla has been found to have neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects in animal studies.

This combination of organic Astragalus and organic Reishi is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The organic Reishi is carefully grown on organic millet to nurture its level of polysaccharides, and the organic Astragalus root is classified as "premium grade" due to the age and the size of the root.

The use of Astragalus dates back to the 5th century where it was described as a superior herb due to its tonic action. This supreme group of herbs was described as "rulers ... they control the maintenance of life and correspond to heaven." Of this group of tonic herbs, Astragalus has earned the highest regard and is known as the "yellow leader." Currently, Astragalus is listed in the traditional medicine guides (pharmacopoeia) of China and Japan.

Western herbalists began using Astragalus in the 1800's as a tonic. It became more popular in the 1980's as an important aid in strengthening the natural defense system of the body. It is presently being studied by researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in collaboration with the Federal Government's Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) research program. The clinical study will focus on botanicals that affect the immune system of patients with cancer and infectious disease. Note: This does not prove the effectiveness of Astragalus in the treatment of cancer, and we do not advocate the use of herbs for self-treatment for any serious disease without the advice of a qualified health care professional.

Reishi is highly regarded in both Chinese and Japanese cultures. Historically, royalty would use this revered mushroom in the hopes of obtaining longevity and to maintain calmness and thought during meditation. It was not until the 1970's that this mushroom was introduced to the West. The red Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) have demonstrated the most significant health-enhancing effects.

Warnings & Disclaimers:

Shatavari has the general ability to promote normal physical functions and counteract the adverse effects of stress. In eight different stress tests, Shatavari produced significant anti-stress and immuno-stimulant effects.  Studies have also shown that Shatavari supports the production of breast milk and promotes healthy liver activity.

Dosha Guide?
In Ayurveda there are seven basic body constitutions resulting from the predominance of one or more energetic influences or Doshas. The Doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, influence physical, mental and spiritual health. Everyone is considered to be a unique combination of these three body influences. Your natural Doshic state of balance is called Prakruti.  In traditional use, Shatavari's cooling properties control disturbances in Vata and Pitta body constitutions.

Maca has been cultivated since pre-Incan times. This nutritious root is prized by indigenous peoples for its health-giving properties. It is an adaptogen, a substance which helps to promote endurance and vitality.

Maca has been cultivated since pre-Incan times in the inhospitable higher elevations of the Andes, where it is the only food source that will grow. This nutritious root is prized by indigenous peoples for its health-giving properties and has been critical for their survival. Soon after the Conquest, the Spanish found that their livestock were reproducing poorly in the highlands, and the Indigenous people recommended Maca. The results were so remarkable there are existing records from 200 years ago which indicate that in one area alone 9 tons of Maca was purchased.

Many researchers and authors describe its adaptogenic properties. Traditionally, Maca has also been used to relieve stress, as an aphrodisiac, and for fertility enhancement in both males and females. Recently, commercial Maca products have gained popularity in areas outside of South America, especially in Europe.
