Eleuthero is recognized as being a gentle alternative to Panax Ginseng. Eleuthero is used during times of stress and is especially notable as an immune tonic in the middle aged and elderly.

Eleuthero was the first herb to be classified as an adaptogen by Russian scientists and was therefore, the model for all future research on this group of herbs. An adaptogen is a substance that helps the body adapt to various types of stress. In order to achieve this status a plant must meet the following criteria:
It must be safe.
It must also have a broad-spectrum, normalizing action that brings an organism back to homeostasis.
It must produce a nonspecific response in the body.

In the late 60's and 70's multiple studies of this herb were conducted in healthy people and Eleuthero was found to increase the ability of subjects to withstand stress (from heat, noise, exercise and increase in workload). Subjects also experienced increases in mental alertness and work output. As a result of this research, Eleuthero was being used by Russian athletes and astronauts to prepare them for their events.

Eleuthero contains a group of constituents known as eleutherosides it also contains triterpenoid sapponins, and glycans, and many others. Modern science has not proven either exactly how eleuthero works or the relevance of each of its various constituents. Most likely it is a combination of many of the constituents, and is therefore best to take the whole herb.

The extract is normally standardized to 0.8% eleutherosides B and E, and is normally taken at doses between 100-200 mg per day.  The standardized extract is a ten-fold concentrate of the whole herb that we sell.  The dose for the organic whole herb is 1000-2000 mg per day (or 1-2 grams).  The German Commission E and the British Herbal Pharmocopeia both recommend 2-3 grams per day for a variety of uses.

As an home herbal remedy, Nettles have a long history of use. A tea made from the leaves has traditionally been used as a tonic.

Our freshly gathered Nettle are promptly freeze-dried to preserve the full spectrum of chemical activity within the herb. The active ingredient in Nettle is unknown, and it may be that it is a combination of ingredients rather than one single compound which may be responsible for its activity.

Due to our high quality control standards we use only organically cultivated plants from an approved site rather than wild-crafted plants as studies show that Nettle absorbs undesirable heavy metals as well as the beneficial minerals from the soil.

Why do we use Freeze-Dried Nettle?

Freeze-dried Nettle is the form that was used in a well-respected study conducted by the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
The dosage used for the research conducted by NCNM is exactly the same as the recommended dosage of OWH Nettles or Aller-Aid.
Our product is dried using the same drying technique that was used in the clinical trial above. The histamine, serotonin and the acetylcholine that is concentrated in the Nettle stinging hairs is lost in air-dried Nettle, but not in freeze-dried Nettle.

Why do we use the whole herb instead of a standardized extract?

The active ingredient in Nettle is unknown, and it may be that it is a combination of ingredients rather than one single compound which may be responsible for its activity.
This is an emerging trend we are seeing among the recent research in many different herbs. There are over 100 constituents that have been isolated from the Nettle plant.

Why do we use organic Nettle instead of wild-crafted?

After monitoring and observing the heavy metal levels we decided that the organically cultivated material was of much higher quality. Nettles are well known for absorbing all minerals from its soil. Unfortunately it also absorbs metals, such as lead, from the soil. In fact, one published study shows the use of Nettles as a biomarker to monitor lead in soil that is known to be contaminated.
Another study illustrates the effect that the growth environment has upon lead levels. They found that Nettle harvested from the mountains was 5x lower in lead than the Nettle harvested from a railway station, and was 7x lower than the plants grown near the side of a highway.
Using this knowledge we made the decision to hand-harvest our Nettles from a local organic farm. This way we can be assured that the quality meets our high standards.

How does the liquid compare to the Freeze-Dried capsule?

The serotonin is known to be destroyed in the liquid extract due to enzyme activity. The liquid extract has many uses but may not be as useful for seasonal allergies.

Stinging Nettle is widely known for the rash it causes when fresh. Once dry it becomes a highly nutritious herbal food rich in iron, magnesium, calcium, boron and carotenoids appropriate for treatment of "deficient blood" i.e. anemia and low hematocrit during pregnancy. A mild non-irritating, potassium-sparing diuretic, it is a "kidney food" strengthening function and tonus of the organ.
